Is Pilates hard? It depends. Pilates is designed to be adaptable to various fitness levels, making it accessible for beginners and challenging for seasoned practitioners. The beauty lies in its ability to grow with you and be with your body exactly where its at on any given day.

For newcomers, Pilates might initially seem deceptively gentle, but don't let that fool you. The emphasis on control, precision, and breath means every movement is purposeful. It's not about how many reps you can do but how mindfully you perform each one. After teaching and taking both yoga and pilates for several years, I personally started to notice how challenging the simple movements were. We tend to want to hit the position or move and go on to the next thing. The challenge often came into it when you intentionally connected your muscles to the movement, especially the smaller often missed muscles.

To elevate the challenge, focus on perfecting your form. Small adjustments can transform an exercise from moderate to intense. The Roll-Up, for instance, becomes a true test of abdominal strength when executed with deliberate control, from the initiation of the movement to the final stretch. You can also begin to feel where you are tight or overworking through your back.

Another way to up the difficulty is by incorporating props. While Pilates can be equipment-free, adding elements like resistance bands or small balls introduces new dimensions of resistance and instability. This engages more muscle groups and demands heightened concentration. Crunches with the small ball are a favorite and I find the shake in my core quickly!

For those seeking an advanced Pilates challenge, consider exploring the world of apparatus. The reformer, for example, offers variable resistance, allowing for a customizable and more strenuous workout. The intricate pulley and spring system can turn familiar exercises into a formidable test of strength and stability.

Interval training can also inject intensity into your Pilates routine. Alternating between periods of high and low intensity keeps your heart rate up, enhancing cardiovascular fitness while still reaping the benefits of Pilates' core-focused movements.

In essence, Pilates can be as challenging as you make it. It's about pushing your limits, embracing the burn, and constantly refining your technique. Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned practitioner, there's always room to challenge yourself within the Pilates framework. Pilates is designed to meet your body where its at and continue to challenge you along your fitness journey.
